Colored Rice

For Christmas, the babes got a Flisat table. I am so excited to make bases for sensory play! My 1-year-old is really looking for something more in depth like this. Colored rice is one of the first bases we made and it was SO easy! I think they turned out stunning.

You will need:
Vinegar
Food Coloring (we tried liquid and gel – see which I prefer below!)
Rice
Zip Lock Bags
Open air containers for rice to dry in – 1 per color

Start by measuring 1 cup of rice into a zip lock bag. Do this for however many colors you are making.

If you are using liquid food coloring, add 8-10 drops plus 1/2 tsp of vinegar. Shake it up!

For gel food coloring, add a generous dollop and shake!

Both kinds of food coloring work but the gel food coloring tends to clump and you have to smoosh it and shake it a few times. I found a few small clumps of gel after I finished shaking. I prefer the liquid for this reason. It’s really not a big deal, just make sure you check for clumps a few times if you use gel.

You can really see how awesome the colors set in after you shake them.

Pour your rice into separate containers to dry. Ours dried super fast but we got busy and ended up leaving them out for 2 days.

We used our colored rice for Rainbow Rice Sensory Activities in our new Flisat table with cups, spoons and funnels.
