Ikamper Skycamp 3.0 One Year Review

After over a year of adventures, from weekend getaways to cross-country road trips, we can confidently say that the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 has exceeded our expectations in every way. We love how spacious it is. It offers plenty of room for a comfortable night’s sleep after a long day of adventuring. The quality of the material is the best and setup and takedown is a breeze.

Easy Setup and Takedown

The most important standout feature of the Skycamp 3.0 is how easy it is to set up and take down. This is important because every time you want to drive, you need to close up the rooftop tent. It takes just a few minutes to open and less than a minute close, which means we spend less time wrestling with the tent and more time enjoying the great outdoors. The simplicity of the setup has made our camping trips much more enjoyable.

Spaciousness

The spaciousness is one of the Skycamp’s best features. It never feels cramped or claustrophobic, which I am very sensitive of. The interior is thoughtfully designed, and the mural of the world map adds a touch of charm, making it feel cozy and homey.

We fit our family of 4 inside the Skycamp. In our previous Roofnest, we took a 16 day trip with the 4 of us sleeping in the Roofnest every night. Now that the kids are getting older, each of us are looking for a little more space. Hubby and I now sleep in the inTech Flyer Explore and the kids get the Skycamp to themselves. They love setting up their beds each night after a long day of adventures. While we could definitely all still sleep in the Skycamp together, the inTech Flyer Explore is a great addition to our setup.

Quality Materials

The Skycamp’s material far surpasses the Roofnest. The Roofnest, on the left,  has a plasticy look and feel to the material. It’s very thin and the zippers constantly got stuck. The Skycamp, on the right, has very thick, smooth material. You can open all of the windows for a lot of light, or zipper them shut for complete darkness. The zippers on the Skycamp open and close with no effort. I am partial to the clean, professional look of the Skycamp material versus the Roofnest as well.

Ladder

When we owned the Roofnest Condor XL, we had issues with the ladder on our trip to Colorado. It overtightened and got incredibly stuck. We were lucky to have been at my brother’s house at the time and had the correct tools to fix it. Had we been camping, I don’t know how we would have fixed it in order to close the tent and drive. The Skycamp’s ladder, on the other hand, has been flawless. No more struggling to adjust it or worrying about it getting stuck; it works perfectly every time.

Openness

I love the openness that the Skycamp offers. The sky window is large and is great for letting extra light in during the day or for stargazing at night. With all of the windows open, you truly get an immersive outdoor experience with the safety and comfort of a real bed.

Mattress Debate

There is a lot of debate over the quality of the mattress in the Skycamp. My experience, as a person with terrible hips and knees, has been great. While it is a thinner mattress, which makes sense because it needs to fit inside the Skycamp, it is still very comfortable. When we took a 16 day trip to Colorado in the RoofNest, I woke up with hip pain constantly. I have not had that issue with the Skycamp mattress. One argument is that the mattress should be better for the price you pay. I believe the value of the Skycamp goes far beyond just the mattress. Features like the rugged Rocky Black Shell, smooth zippers, superior fabric quality, spacious interior, effortless setup and takedown, and the reliable ladder all contribute to making the Skycamp worth every penny. Would I prefer if it were cheaper? Of course! But after owning both the Roofnest and the Skycamp, I feel the price is fully justified by the overall experience and quality. I certainly don’t feel shortchanged or misled.

Overall

The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 has become an essential part of our outdoor adventures. Its spaciousness, comfort, ease of setup, and quality materials make it worth the money. The Skycamp is perfect for a family of 4 with young children and is easy enough for beginner campers to navigate. If you’re considering a rooftop tent, we highly recommend the Skycamp 3.0. It’s an investment that will elevate your camping experience to a whole new level.
